Sad news hit fans of – formerly – punk rock band Fall Out Boy when they announced an “indefinite hiatus” in Nov. 2009, the peak of their fame. The band had just released their album “Believers Never Die” days before the announcement and wrapped up their last tour for a few years.
Billboard pens that throughout the duration of the hiatus many solo projects were released such as new groups, solo albums, and even a book from bassist Pete Wentz. April 12, 2012 the wait was finally over for the newly sounding band to return to their throne together. This date brought the world their first album since the break – “Save Rock N Roll.” The Chicago Tribune reports the album debuted at number one on the charts – making it easy for first time listeners to join the old fans blasting it in their cars.
The journey through the music begins with the intense vocals and harsh instrumentals of “The Phoenix,” following the first single, smash hit “My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark.”
Throughout the album are many styles and out-of-the-ordinary collaborations, such as the moody “Just One Yesterday” with British singer Foxes, the unpredicted rap verse from Big Sean in “The Mighty Fall,” and true rock n roll vibes from the one and only Courtney Love on “Rat A Tat.”
This all leads up to the most iconic on the track list, “Save Rock N Roll,” with – no kidding – Elton John. This song is arguably the best, and one giant roller coaster to ride. Lead singer Patrick Stump opens the song sharing his struggles, inspires his audience, and then hits the powerful chorus owning up to his loyalty to true rock n roll. John takes it from there in his own verse, and joins Stump in the chorus. The bridge is jam packed with resistance to let rock n roll die, gradually gets more intense, and then all stops. All that’s left is John’s infamous piano playing, reminding the audience, “You are what you love, not who loves you.” Louder than ever, the chorus returns.
The song fades away and the album is officially over, leaving the audience speechless and full of emotion after witnessing an incredible come back.
