Landmark Cases: Tinker vs De Moines

The Tinker vs De Moines case has had a big impact today on many student “activists.” Because of this case students are now free to peacefully protest and speak up on any issues, as long as it is not vulgar or disrupting class. I believe this case moved us forward in a positive way because students now don’t have to feel like they’re robots at school and don’t have to completely shy away from speaking up on something that is affecting them.

This case particularly relates to FHN’s walk-outs back in March. Students were able to peacefully protest and leave their homeroom’s after given permission by the school principal, if they wanted to protest gun violence and support the victims of Valentine’s Day’s school shooting in Florida. Also because of this case, I was able to show my support of the second amendment by simply wearing a necklace with a small gun on it. Both forms of peaceful protest are legal because of the Tinker vs De Moines case.
